Heated Bones has carved a reputation as Colorado’s psychedelic rockers, known for their captivating narratives and energetic performances. Drawing inspiration from bands like King Gizzard and Arctic Monkeys, they skillfully blend various rock elements to concoct their unique sound, which they describe as “broth rock.” Their music brews an elusive concoction of genres that leaves listeners enthralled and wanting more. The band has been prolific over the last year. They released their debut eponymous album Heated Bones at the beginning of this year and are now back with their sophomore album entitled Hot Lightning

The album commences with the invigorating track “Amalgamite.” It defies easy categorization, blending various genres into a captivating musical amalgamation. While listening, I couldn’t help but notice shades of a livelier Joy Division in its sound. The distinct vocals and catchy guitar work truly stand out, creating an unconventional sonic journey that soars with its own distinctive charm. It’s an exceptional start to the album that leaves a lasting impression.

“Spring Dream” begins with a heavy hitting beat and airy synths. I loved the lush tones here and ethereal quality to the music. This song reminded me of the baroque pop of a band like Grizzly Bear but also a bit of The Beatles when they were in their psychedelic phase. There are lots of interesting things happening.

The band hits their stride with “Dazzle Master,” a standout track that could easily be considered the catchiest on the album. The pacing is impeccable, drawing listeners in with its infectious energy. The vocalist’s delivery of lines is undeniably distinctive, adding an extra layer of intrigue to the song. Moreover, “Dazzle Master” features a series of impressive transitions that heighten the overall impact, making it a true gem within the album.

“Time” emanates a spirited garage-like energy, reminiscent of artists such as Ty Segall. On the other hand, “Hot Lighting” is an infectious, almost banger, infused with funkiness that ignites a joyous sensation. Saving one of their strongest tracks for last, the band presents “Berry.” This remarkable song exudes an exceptional and distinctive sound, blending originality and novelty. Yet, it doesn’t compromise on melodic allure, captivating listeners with its irresistible hooks.

This album reminded me of the indie rock that was coming out around 2005. It was a marvelous time for music and Heated Bones is a band which seems to be keeping that flame alive that stemmed from bands like Grizzly Bear, Deerhunter and Animal Collective. What a great album.
