Hey, super nice to have the chance to chat with you. What have you been up to over the past year in this big old mess?

Matt Cahill: … and you guys! Well honestly, it’s been a blur of grinding with music. Life has changed pretty drastically going full time into the industry, so it’s been a case of keeping momentum whilst also making sure I don’t burn out!

I’m very interested in how you started your adventure with music – and did you know from the beginning that this is what you wanted to do?

MC: Oh yes, as my fiancée often tells people, “It had to be music, you can’t do anything else,” which is harsh but true! I started playing guitar at 8 and then never diverted from my path, finding production later in life then just hyper-focused the vision. I never wanted to do anything else!

Congrats on your new release, ‘Trust’. Can you give us some insight into it?

MC: Thanks! Yes, it was a hard release, after having worked on it for so long and I had so many versions floating around over 4 years, that being able to finally say, “Yes, this is the one,” was a real challenge. That’s a challenge that basically all creative people go through, but you don’t realise how laborious a task it was until you are the other side!

What are you doing to ensure you continue to grow and develop as an artist?

MC: Persistence balanced with practising a healthy dose of self-awareness. It’s easy to get lost in the highs and lows of making music, losing sight of the path is easy when you are being pushed and pulled around by the various stages, be it writing/producing or socials/promoting. As independent artists it’s our responsibility to handle basically every step, so whilst I will persist in my vision, I will make sure to retain mental energy to execute everything and not allow impulse or overthinking to sour the process.

What should we be expecting from your next releases in terms of style and sound? How different are they going to be compared to your previous works?

MC: It will all be the same realm of electronically-driven music, but I plan to jump around quite a lot to the various ends of the field. I, like basically every artist these days, am inspired by so many different genres that it’s illogical to pin myself in a corner. So keep an open mind!

Where are you based? Can you tell us how the music scene there has inspired your sound at all?

MC: I’ll be entirely honest, I am based in Bournemouth, which has basically 3 “scenes”: Metal/Rock, Rap and Indie, none of which have really correlated to my inspiration directly. Though that’s not to say the people in the scene haven’t been instrumental, Cherry that collab-ed on the song is in a fantastic band called ‘Pharoahs’ and there are many insanely talented people in the area that I would kill for the chance to collaborate with. As for direct inspiration, no, my sound has been affected by sounds far beyond the local horizon.

If you could perform at any venue in the world, where would it be and why?

MC: I haven’t mentally processed how I would even perform my music live yet or if I even would, but in a hypothetical world, nothing beats the feeling of packing out a home venue with friends so the 02 in Boscombe would be a rad gig!

Can we expect a new EP or an album from you in the near future?

MC: An EP certainly, but I have a few more single releases lined up first. I am very fresh on the scene and need to cut my teeth!

Finally, have you got anything to share regarding upcoming gigs, and what have you got planned for the rest of 2022?

MC: Building more momentum with singles, showing more of the angles I am going for, then I’ll hit ’em with an EP!
