The setting of this piece in two parts takes place in midwinter in Japan: the sun is low, the days are short, the nights are long and snow is everywhere in beautiful Hokkaido. It’s the winter solstice or Tōji and the end of year announces a symbolic death of what we know and have experienced in this year, making way for new adventures in the coming months.

Released just last month, we’re excited to share the latest from indie-electronic artist Mathieu Karsenti. Titled ‘Tōji (part I & II)’, and it’s safe to say that the new track hits all the sweet spots.

It’s been awhile since we’ve covered an instrumental on the blog but you know, its for a good reason. For us, its really challenging to dig through hundreds of releases and find something that creatively speaks volume without some sort of imagery from the vocalist. With instrumentals, its challenging because it has to tell a story in order to keep the listener interested, but that’s exactly what Mathieu did with ‘Tōji (part I & II)’.

Check it out for yourself and let us know what you think and don’t forget to connect with Mathieu Karsenti online to stay up to date on any future releases!
